Breaking News, Summerhall, Edinburgh.

This review was first published on the public reviews.

Iceland has a reputation for producing art that is a little whimsical in nature, not to everyone’s tastes, but this reviewer is a big fan of Icelandic design, music, people and the accent. Not that there were any accents in Breaking News, created by London and Reykjavik based visual theatre company VaVaVoom.
The company, comprised of a collaboration of a wide variety of disciplines, is promising, as is the set, a wall of blinds, tantalising tilted, all set for revelation.

Breaking News concerns our relationship with newspapers. The company poses several interesting questions in their programme; ‘Can we take in so much news that we become news reporters ourselves? Who will censor us? Yet the contents of this puppetry and projection based piece are disappointing as the questions seem to remain unexplored. The central puppet is formed through the manipulation of a red dressing gown, a news junkie, who gets their fix from a (beautifully constructed) paper radio, television and laptop.
However, the opening sequence is long and made its point without exploring the idea further. This was a problem with many of the sequences; whilst the objects are exquisitely made and pretty to look at, they didn’t allow enough exploration of the topic beyond information overload and dystopia. They are clearly a talented bunch, and there were some lovely moves between macro and micro worlds, but more exploration of their subject matter is necessary to answer those questions.
